FAQ / FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Q1What if the blades on the skate I want to donate have rust or damage? Can they still be donated?
Ans.You’re welcome to bring them into any Play It Again Sports location but likely we will be unable to take them.
Q2Do you accept skate equipment (guards, helmets, hockey sticks, padding)
Ans.At all Play It Again Sports Canadian locations we do. At StorageMart locations listed as donation locations on this website we request only Skates, Helmets and Sticks in usable conditions. Play It Again Sports turns your donations into credit for Skate To Great to get the sizes or helmets needed. The StorageMart locations listed on our site collect skates, helmets and sticks on our behalf storing them and then we sort through them providing them to organizations in need directly. Q5Can I get a tax receipt for my donation?
Ans.As a registered Canadian charity we can in many instances issue receipts for monetary or skate donations. We are not registered in the United States or any other region and therefore can not provide receipts that provide taxable benefit in these regions. For donations accepted via Play It Again Sports in Canada we can turn the receipt issued by Play It Again into a taxable donation receipt online. For more information on this process click here. [change “clicking here” to link to How To Donate Skates] The Canada Revenue Agency requires us to have someone value your donation and the staff at Play It Again Sports in Canada will provide it with a value and receipt. Once you have the receipt, click here [change “click here” to link to Receipt Request Form which we’ll provide more info on later]and make a taxable receipt request. Our volunteer team will reconcile that a donation for the amount provided has been obtained and we will then issue a receipt typically in 2-4 weeks after receiving your request. We often will send your receipt via email as a PDF file to save costs associated with postage.
Q6My child need skates or helmets, how do I get them?
Ans.Skate To Great supports existing programs throughout Canada.
Q7Is there a similar organization in the United States?
Ans.Unfortunately not that we know of at this time. Skate To Great is actively seeking to expand and we hope to begin to expand to the United States and abroad in the coming years. If you would like to get involved please click here. [change “click here” to link to the Volunteer page]
Q8Do you accept skates from the United States?
Ans.We do, but it sometimes gets complicated with shipping. Our advice is to find a local school, arena, community center or local organization and see if donating your skates will make a difference locally. Please contact us [change “contacts us” to link to the Contact Us page] if you find a great place to provide skates to. We would love to include them on our skate donation locations map for others to donate to as well.
Q9Where do I drop off skates?
Ans.Please check out our How To Donate Skates page. [change “How To Donate Skates” to link to the How To Donate Skates page link]
Q10Does the drop off have to be done before or during business hours or is there an after-hours drop box?
Ans.
Q11There aren't any donation locations near me, is there another donation option?
Ans.We are actively seeking additional locations that work with out model. Unfortunately due to collection, sorting and liability concerns it can often be problematic. If you are unable to find a donation location near you, we request that you look to your local community and see if a local school, community center or arena could put your used skates to good use. If you find a great location, let us know! We would love to include them on our site and have others donate there too. Please provide us with a contact there so we can have our volunteer team reach out and make a connection.
Q12Will you pick up my skates?
Ans.Skate to Great is operated by volunteers and while we would love to be able to pick up skates directly from your location, unfortunately we are currently limited in our abilities to do so. We’ve got lots of locations across Canada, conveniently located to donate skates.
Q13What equipment will you take?
Ans.Skate to Great is currently only accepting Helmets (within their expiry date, see sticker within helmet), Hockey Sticks and Skates (both hockey and figure skating). Due to health and safety concerns we are not accepting pads, jerseys, socks or other equipment at this time.
